Welcome to Math Class

Hey guys, welcome to the blog, I have found a few articles on the current state of math education in the world. Some of them are very college based or United States based, but I think they get their point across. Please choose one to read and comment on this blog posting with a minimum of a 50 word response. You will not be graded on your opinion, but you will be graded on how closely you read the article and how well formulated your opinion is. Please let me know which article you've chosen and include your name, there is a sample below.

  1. read the article: Do the Math Right and I completely agree with the article. Math classes are designed to be too difficult for students these days and many people, like myself feel frustrated and easily defeated by math classes. I often wonder why it is important to learn a lot of the material. When they said that a lot of money was being spent for students not to even learn math, I found this incredibly true and thought provoking. How depressing! But it is my goal to enjoy the school year and try harder in a math class which is much more project based and very hands on. I want to ask a lot of questions and really grow more comfortable this year with math. -Danny Boy Schiff

  2. I read "Is Algebra Necessary? New York Times." learning Algebra (Although frustrating and confusing more than half the time) has more value to me personally than the article states; not only do people exercise their minds through the math, but they also find an understanding over time as to how they personally understand the things they are taught. Once clicked to the math... there's not much else they will have trouble with concerning the topic. Therefore I both agree and disagree to certain points with the article.

  3. I read: "Mathematics. Trust me. It's important in your life."
For what I read on the article, math is really important for life because also all the social networks that we all use in these days are baised on the algorithms. They can access to all the information that we need and are also used for the google maps. Math is really important and you understand all the basics you can do whatever you want.

I agree with this article as I also think that is extremely hard for teachers to interest students in math, it can be for many different reasons that they dislike the class but it tends to be that before they have even taken the class they have already formed a negative opinion of it. I think it also really depends on the teaching methods, if the class is more fun and not extremely hard, but still a bit challenging, then the students will be more interested. But in my opinion it is important for students to be interested in math because then they will pay attention in class and learn because they will need the information later on in their lives as well. I think that this article is very true and for the students to be able to learn they have to be engaged in the class.

    Do the math... right

I thinks that the article is very true, is not easy for the teachers do that all the students love the subject. But if they do the class more fun and the students will enjoy doing maths they will be more interested and they also pay more attention, they will study more at home .If maths kill your dream, i think that you don't have to hate the subject you have only to put more enthusiasm and try more times.

  6. From the article "Mathematics. Trust me. It's important in your life" I understood that math is a very important in life , and I agree with this. In life people use mathematics all the time : when they count profit from their businesses , when they inventing something or when they cook . Also , all people need jobs , but they need to know math to understand how to do their jobs. Math is very useful and people should learn it.

  7. I read “mathematics.Trust me.It is important in your life.”
I think math is very important subject because we need it a lot for our life.
For example, many of people in the world are using social networks like Facebook.
And,we can also know one`s positional information in Google map.It is mathematics to have enabled them.
So,I think math is very important subject and we must understand it as we can.-Shunya Sunami

  8. I read " Do the math right." And I agree with this article, because it tells the truth which is that a lot of students don't like math. Well, this problem with math could be for many reasons, but I think that the main reason it is just because people before taking lessons already have negative thoughts about it. However it also depend on the teachers mood and his atitudes with the students. If the teacher shows that he is interested in teaching the students, normally the students will give him a positive feedback.

Mathematics, trust me. It's important in your life.

I agree with this article because explained very well how math is behind the things we use every day like Google for looking some information, Facebook to find a friend or Google map that help you to find a place. Also twitter uses algorithms to give people the possibility to communicate. In fact it counts the number of words that you can publish.
Also the people that predict the weather are using algorithms to find out what the weather will be the next day. This means that behind these nice 'faces' we see there are a lot of calculations behind.
Therefore we can say that math is very useful on daily life.

  10. I read the article: “Mathematics, trust me. It’s important in your life”.

I thought the article was very accurate and enlightening. We think at our age that math is only relevant to high school students as a school subject, but that is not the case. In every day life we use the Internet, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social networks that are all created and based on complicated mathematical equations or algorithms. What I found most interesting was the fact that because of math we are able to track a person’s mobile device anywhere in the world with a simple click. Also we are able to predict the weather, order our schoolbooks, download music, play video games and manage our bank accounts.
Algorithms provide the basis for a global world and economy.

I both agree and disagree with the article, teachers should make math more fun and attractive. But also, students do not have to like math. Everyone has different personalites so they don’t have to like math. I think that math should not be important for every student’s life. Every student isn’t going to be a mathematician.

I read "Mathematics. Trust me. It's important in your life.", in which the author disagrees with Jodi Picoult's statement "Calculus. Trust me. You will never use it.", just like me. Social medias and digital tools that we today very often use and depend on, work because of their basis made up of mathematical algorithms. I think it's sad that Jodi's statement first of all is so inappreciative to both the algorithms and to the mathematicians and computer scientists that develop the function of these. It is thanks to them that we can continue to use google, twitter, weather prediction etc to the extent where those instruments are essential to many of us in our daily lives. I also believe that Jodi’s negative way of thinking only can affect people not knowing more about the subject into having her same attitude. Ultimately this can result in less interest-> less ideas-> less development in the industries. And this, I think can only be a bad thing in the demanding part of the world that we live in, regarding technology and the availability of social medias. Mathematics is a huge building block to today’s society, and therefore I think it should be getting way more attention and appreciation.

    Do the Math Right

I agree with this article very much. Many Math classes these days are meant to be to hard for students, so that when they can't pass one specific Math class the school won't let them try some other math related subject. These Math classes can some times be very boring. On way to make things look less abstract is for example to relate it to some real life situation in which that specific equation would be used. This might also help a person to find out what they might want to do as a job.

Being a student who used to dread math class, i could not agree more with this article. I think the style of teaching has a huge impact on the desire to learn of the students. I have come to enjoy math thanks to one of my previous teachers. This subject is a very important part of our education, since even if you dont want a career in maths, it is still used very often (sometimes without you even being aware) in your daily life. I think math should definitely still continue to be taught, however a fun, interactive teacher whose goal is to develop your skills while making it enjoyable, will help students shed their negative pre-conceptions and develop more healthy, positive attitudes and better results.

    "Do The Math Right"

I read the article "Do The Math Right". The following article is simply telling the readers the fact that the teachers should make the math classes more enjoyable, interesting, and at the same time motivating for the students to do math. Indeed I agree with the fact that the students should feel more comfortable in the math class yet I must disagree in this case. Even thought students think that the class is entertaining or amusing that doesn't mean that their learning skills gets better. So if the classes are more interesting to be in, they absolutely have fun but it doesn't certainly mean that thier math level is going to rise. In conclusion I agree with this author but I still must disagree in some parts of this article.

  16. Do The Math Right.

This article talked about the importance of mathematics and how teachers can engage their students in the class. I strongly agree with this article because I too think that it is very difficult to interest students in math. I find that if a class is challenging yet fun at the same time, students will enjoy learning the lesson and will pay more attention. In conclusion, I agree with this article and believe that if students are taught in a fun way, they will be more willing to learn.

  17. Do The Math Right

What this article pointed out was not only the fact that math is everywhere you are, it doesn't matter if you like it or not, but also the opinion of how students (who don't like math or have difficulties with it) can change their minds about the subject.

Even though I am not very good at math myself – nor do i love the subject – I agree with this article's information. I believe that even though someone might absolutely detest math, if the teacher finds a way to make the learning of the subject entertaining and fun but with the learning in it obviously, the student who doesn't like math might turn out to like it at least a little bit and become better at it throughout time.

    Do The Math Right

This article talked about how math can delete your dreams and that sometimes teachers make it boring and difficult. I agree with the article and it's not good what the article is telling. Math should be something that deletes your dream. It should be that if you fail a math class because the teacher made it really bad it's game over for you. Teachers can be the main problem of why a student failed. When a teacher makes the lesson boring and difficult a students could not learn anything and that can lead to fail the class. If teachers make entertaining and funny the classes students will start to like it and will learn a lot.

  19. I read the article" Mathematics. Trust Me. It's Important in Your Life”
I agree with it because math is imported and it is everywhere example:"the technology that underpinned CSIRO's wireless LAN patent, enables billions of devices such as smart phones, tablets and computers to connect wirelessly and it came out of CSIRO's pioneering work in radioastronomy andthe work has involved mathematics to.So i think math is usefull.

  20. I read: Mathematics. Trust me. It's importnat in your life.
After reading this article on calculus I understood how much math is important in life for example:(google search, Twitter/Facebook, Amazon, and video games). If it wasen't for math, people could not use ther elcectronic apps because apps need algorithms. If people did not study math there would be no engineers, and without engineers there would be no algorithms, which can access to provide the information we need.

  21. Do the Math... Right

I read the article "Do the Math... Right" and I am in complete agreement with it. Though I am not a math person I know that math is essential to future careers and sometimes daily life, so it is really sad to read that people with aspiring careers may not get to do what they want because of a math class that it taught for top scorers.

I also found it interesting how different countries result in the case that as the teacher is prepared the students benefit and acquire good grades. It is very important for math class to be fun, engaging and at a level where people of different proficiencies can profit from math class.

  22. i have read an article about Algebra. And i am agree that Algebra is a VERY important subject in schools. Everything that we have now mont be invented without Algebra. We won't have any high technologies, without Algebra. We won't have any shops and moneys, without Algebra. i want Algebra to become my favorite subject. and i want to finish with words one Russian politician Lenin:"we must to study, study, study and one more time study"

I read the article" Mathematics. Trust Me. It's Important in Your Life.”
I am agree with the author of this article, mathematics is a very important science. The mathematics is used in many spheres of our life: from household tasks and to creation of mathematical algorithms. In the IT sphere for example - all web-sites are constructed on the intellectual property that is based on mathematical algorithms. Billions of electronic devices uses wireless connection based on the CSIRO'S LAN technology. Math is very important for me and all other people.

    Do the Math...Right

I agree with this article. In Korea, students learn much harder math than students from other countries. Many students in Korea hate math because it is so hard. In TASIS, it is much easier than Korea, but still, there are some students who are struggling with the subject. Math is essential in our lives. Students do not have to think that math deletes their dreams. It will be so much better if teachers teach it more entertaining and explaining easily. Students who are in trouble with the subject should change their minds about the subject.
